UK reissue of the British mod-revivalist's classic 1978 album with 8 bonus tracks added, 'Love And A Molotov Cocktail', 'Can I Crash Here?', 'Civilisation', 'Fun City' (single version), 'EC4', 'Beverly' (single version), 'Name Dropping' & 'Fly V Fly'. Captain Oi! Records. 2001. Audio CD: Amazon Also Available in Vinyl: Amazon CD Review: This one slipped off the radar years ago. The Flys were an imaginative four-piece band who existed in that netherworld on the fringes of the new wave known, for want of a better term, as power pop. Think of The Records, The Vapors, The Rumour, Ducks Deluxe: mostly good, solid bands that didn't much trouble the charts, sometimes pop, sometimes more R&B. The Flys at their best combined great lead guitar lines, a lush sound, catchy melodies and original musical ideas. The title track is the best example, featuring some striking guitar and vocal rhythms. Many of the songs seem to deal with the fulfilment of people who don't have much. The lyrics tend to be low on quantity, high on impact. Influences are not especially obvious, though "Fun City", an excellent song, is reminiscent of Roxy Music's "Virginia Plain". Otherwise, they fit in with the mood of the times. Bonus tracks feature single versions and b-sides, the CD finishing with a characteristically nifty instrumental. The Flys may be proof that naming your band after an insect doesn't guarantee success, but their music's well worth investigating. Source: www.amazon.co.uk
