NEWS DATE: 30 nov 2010 Here is a message from 'The Hazel O'Connor Collective' fundraising Christmas single FB group: The Hazel O'Connor Collective's fundraising Christmas single is due to be released in 6 days. It is imperative that it is purchased between Monday 6th December and Sunday 12th December to give it the best chance of a chart entry by avoiding a clash with the X-Factor single which is due to be release the following week. The 'Re-Joyce' single will be available to buy from most major record stores and download sites. I will put up details of the stores and links to the download sites as soon as they have been confirmed. On the release date (6th December) there will be an interview with Hazel O'Connor plus the first national television airing of 'Re-Joyce' on ITV1's 'Daybreak' at around 8am (subject to change) and also the single will be played on ITV's 'Central Tonight' (Midlands) between 6pm and 6.30pm on the same day. Please show your generosity and support by purchasing a few copies if you are able. It is an excellent Christmas single as I'm sure those of you fortunate enough to have already heard it will agree, and for a most worthy cause. Proceeds from the single will be going to Myton Hospice in Coventry where Hazel's mum (Joyce) has received care and treatment for cancer. Please feel free to 'share' this page with your Facebook friends. |

Leamington debuts Myton Hospice's Christmas charity single
With Pete Chambers Oct 27 2010 |
A TEAM of generous singers has produced a charity Christmas single for the Myton Hospices.
The track is called Re-Joyce, after Coventry-born singer-songwriter Hazel O'Connor's mother - who received respite care in the hospice. Hazel will perform her track at a special launch party at The Assembly, in Spencer Street, Leamington, on November 16. Re-Joyce will be released on December 6, with any money raised going to the hospice, and a small proportion going to Help For Heroes. Hazel, who starred in eighties hit film Breaking Glass, said: "My mother Joyce was very ill with her cancer and it seemed like she was dying. Luckily enough she got a place at Myton Hospice for respite. It was the best thing that ever happened to us in our lives because you don't go to a hospice to die, you actually go to a hospice to live. "We thought we were going to lose her, but she is still with us thanks to the great care she received." Tickets for the launch party cost £15. To book call 01926 523001 or visit www.leamingtonassembly.co.uk. Tickets are also available from Midnight Records on Coventry Market. The Myton Hospices care for more than 2,000 patients every year at the charity's three sites in Warwick, Coventry and Rugby. Time to 'Re-Joyce' in a good cause...
With Pete Chambers Oct 21 2010 |
Carol Decker, Roger Lomas and Hazel O'Connor |
ON Tuesday, November 16, The Hazel O'Connor Collective will launch "Re-Joyce" a song that is a sure
fire box ticker in every way.
It's superbly poignant (and you can't say that about many Christmas singles), celebrating as it does the gift of life. Proceeds from the sales will raise money for Coventry Myton Hospice, and to top it off, it's packed to the rafters with top names. Featured artists include: Hazel O'Connor, Toyah Wilcox, Carol Decker, Pauline Black, Ranking Roger, Vince Hill, Moya Brennan, Neville Staple, Kid Creole, Bob Brolly, The Subterraneans and others. It's produced by Grammy Award winning producer Roger Lomas. I had the pleasure to be in the studio as it was being recorded, it's one of those songs that doesn't come around too often, superbly produced by Roger Lomas, "All of the participating artists were an absolute joy to work with." reveals Roger, "I can honestly say that I have never been so confident of a single's sales potential as I am of this record." The song's lyrics take you from one classic performer to another. It's a sentimental journey, that is until you reach the lines "We are here today", and it's a stop and think moment, and the morale of the story is... enjoy your life and the people you share it with right now, for one day as sure as eggs are eggs, it will be taken away. The song was written by Hazel O'Connor. |
Ranking Roger, Hazel O'Connor and Nev Staple |
Hazel's Mum Joyce is being well cared for at Myton Hospice in Coventry after being diagnosed with
cancer. Hazel wrote the song as a tribute to her mum and to raise funds for Myton Hospice in Coventry
which needs £2.7 million each year to run.
The concert will take on a kind of Band Aid feel to it, as most of the contributing stars listed above will be performing the song and will be singing some of their own hits, I hardly need to say that it's going to be one of those nights where you can say "I was there". Hazel said: "I'm hopeful it will be a celebration party, Bob Brolly is to MC, so there should be some great fun, we have an auction too, and I will be meeting and greeting at the door. "We shot some video of the recording of the song, so we may just show some of the out-takes, that should be fun. We also want to show a film of the work that goes on at Myton, that's very important. "The project is a emotional double edged sword for me," said Hazel. "It's very much about my mum's condition, then on the other hand we have had so many lovely people doing all they can to make this project happen The human spirit is a beautiful thing. Artists who not only sang on the song in the studio, but now want to come back and perform it on stage, that will be a high point." The release date of Re-Joyce is December 6 and the concert is being filmed for television. Doors open at 7pm. Tickets are £15 each and are available from The Assembly www.leamingtonassembly.com and www.thesubs.co.uk and in person at Myton Hospital (Warwick) & Paul's Midnight Record Stall, Coventry Market. |

HAZEL'S SPECIAL CHRISTMAS RECORDING (News date: Aug 25 2010 ) |
Hazel announced in her blog (see Links page):
"I'm getting busy with Mark and Kev from the Subs on a song I wrote for Mum and my Step Dad Geoff last Christmas. I didn't expect them to be alive by Christmas 2009 – we spent Christmas day in Myton Hospice where Mum was being cared for, for two weeks respite which helped her turn around healthwise and gave us this precious extra time together. I am very grateful to all the hospice staff and volunteers. So now we are recording the song called Re-Joyce (In The Bleak Mid-Winter) and I'm plucking up courage to ask various singers, musicians and actors to sing or perform on it. So far Cormac De Barra has put his harp on and yesterday we put on the beautiful voice of Clannad's Moya Brennan. Last week Pauline Black of Selecter said she would sing on it; actress Juiie Graham said she'd love to sing on it ages ago when I played her the demo. I'm plucking up courage to phone Ranking Roger, and some of the Specials and we'll see how it goes. But please support it when we release it on download mid October. All income will go directly to Myton Hospice. More about this later in my next newsletter." The Subterraneans added: "Another day recording the xmas single yesterday with Neville Staples (Specials) and Ranking Roger (The Beat), artists now on the single are: Hazel O'Connor Toyah Wilcox Moya Brennan (Clannad) Carol Decker (T'Pau) Pauline Black (Selecter) Neville Staples (The Specials) Ranking Roger (The Beat) Vince Hill And of course The Subterraneans All produced by Grammy award winner Roger Lomas, more guest artists to come, watch this space. Thanks to Pete and Julie Chambers for pics and filming..." Neil O'Connor in Montreal posted this message: "Audio and Video files sent for Hazel's Christmas charity song, can't wait to see the result with everyone's contributions :)" Neil recently recorded his version of Hazel's classic song "Will you". Recorded and filmed in his Montreal apartment in August 2010, watch the video: Youtube Link Photos: Pete and Julie Chambers: Vince Hill, Pete Chambers, Kev Lomas, Pauline Black, Rogers Lomas, Toyah Wilcox, Mark Roberts, Hazel O'Connor Pete Chambers, Kev Lomas, Mark Roberts, Neville Staple, Hazel O'Connor, Rogers Lomas, Ranking Roger
